In the Heart of New York State
So Much to Offer!
Cortland County sits at the geographic center of New York State and is the eastern gateway to the scenic Finger Lakes region. The county is located about 30 miles south of Syracuse, 30 miles north of Binghamton, and about 15 miles north of Ithaca.
The combination of mountains, rolling hills, gentle valleys, scenic vistas and dramatic lakes make the four-season region one of the most beautiful in New York State. The City of Cortland is the county seat, with a number of small village centers and historic main streets dominating the county’s urban settings. The city is home to one of the top four-year campuses in the State University of New York system, and top-rated Tompkins Cortland Community College is just minutes away.
Cortland County also has proximity to major eastern markets including New York City, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston and Ottawa, and three international airports are within a 30-minute drive. More than 30 miles of Interstate 81 runs directly through the heart of the county featuring five exits, and connections to the New York State Thruway and Route 17 to New York City are all within a half-hour drive.
The county features a vibrant rail system (New York State Susquehanna & Western) with direct interchanges with three Class 1 shippers. A deep water post sits about 60 miles to the north in Oswego County.
